Japanese Black cattle

In Yamagata prefecture, Japanese Black cattle, renowned for producing high-quality wagyu beef, are being colored with vertical stripes using mild bleach or spray paint. Research conducted over three years has shown that striped cattle attract significantly fewer flies, reducing stress levels and discomfort for the animals.
Farmers have traditionally faced issues with bloodsucking insects affecting their herds' reproductive rates. By introducing stripes, farmers aim to help the cattle relax and grow healthily. Observations revealed that striped cattle exhibited fewer signs of irritation compared to unpainted cattle, suggesting a deterrent effect on flies.
Although the scientific reasoning behind this phenomenon remains unclear, researchers are sharing their findings with farmers across the prefecture. Overall, farmers have observed visible improvements in their herds' well-being and are embracing this innovative solution to combat insect-related issues.
